HiLabs Leadership Team

The HiLabs leadership team is an assortment of multidisciplinary industry leaders and professionals with extensive healthcare domain knowledge, experience, and acumen.

They hail from some of the world’s best universities, business schools, and engineering institutes including Harvard, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Georgia Tech, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Bringing in an array of capabilities with backgrounds spanning provider, payer, clinical, big data, AI, ML, strategy, marketing, and entrepreneurship, they are continually innovating by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and applying them in conjunction with value-based care, medical technologies, and other emerging healthcare areas.

Our Name

The company name HiLabs came about when its founders and leaders created a platform idea and named it as Healthcare Innovation Labs (HiLabs).

HiLabs Origin Story

HiLabs was born when technology savant Amit Garg and aspiring physician Neel Butala met at the Yale School of Management while pursuing their MBAs in 2014. In their private equity class, Amit and Neel developed a business plan and entered it into the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute competition, placing in the top five of all entries.

This inspired the official founding of HiLabs with an office in Amit’s townhouse basement near Yale’s campus.

HiLabs pivoted its strategy after seeing a tremendous unmet need to detect and correct data anomalies for healthcare companies.

This problem costs an estimated $100B per year and was a perfect area to apply HiLabs Healthcare, Big Data, and Machine Learning expertise.

As the CEO of HiLabs, Amit has the unique opportunity to leverage his professional experience in business development, product development, operations, consulting, and financial analysis. Being an engineer at heart, the foundation of his experience has been based on data, mathematics, technology, and practical implementations to solve challenging business problems. He founded two companies and led them from startup to successful acquisitions. At Northrop Grumman, he led the implementation of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Encounters Data Processing System (EDPS) and created to help health plans better calculate risk-adjusted about $200 billion capitated payments. Amit's current professional focus is to simplify data mining in healthcare, so that critical insights can be generated from the sea of complex and unorganized healthcare data. Amit holds an MBA with Distinction in Economics from the Yale University School of Management, and a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Neel brings a unique clinical and strategic perspective to HiLabs. Alongside Amit, he co-founded HiLabs with the vision to leverage advanced machine learning methods to address fundamental healthcare data quality issues to empower organizations to rapidly generate insights from their data. Neel is a researcher at Harvard Medical School focusing on using advanced analytic methods on large healthcare datasets and a practicing interventional cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he has received numerous national awards for his innovative research, clinical acumen, and teaching ability. His work has been published in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Circulation. Prior to HiLabs, Neel has worked for Boston Consulting Group on healthcare engagements and served as Executive Director of a free clinic. Neel holds a BA magna cum laude in Economics with High Honors from Harvard College, an MD cum laude from Yale School of Medicine, and an MBA from Yale School of Management.

As Vice President of Strategy and Growth, Sanjay has a broad set of interconnected responsibilities. Chief amongst them is developing HiLabs overall growth strategy, which includes ensuring HiLabs products fill key unmet needs in the marketplace and developing market presence for HiLabs platforms and capabilities. Sanjay has over a decade of experience in the healthcare industry across the payer, provider, and pharmacy areas. Prior to HiLabs, Sanjay was at crankfrog, a boutique healthcare management consulting firm, where he provided growth strategy advice to technology-focused clients. Prior to crankfrog, Sanjay was a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, where he gave guidance to large Fortune 500 companies on strategy, organization, and operations. Sanjay has also worked for CVS and The Advisory Board Company. He enjoys reading non-fiction books, snowboarding, and surfing. Sanjay earned his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and his MBA (with distinction) from Duke's Fuqua School of Business.

As HiLabs Chief Solutions Architect, Niraj Nath is responsible for the overall architecture of its cloud-based healthcare data quality platform. He has continuously architected cutting-edge healthcare technology throughout his two decades in healthcare IT domain. In his earlier role as principal cloud solution architect at CNSI, Niraj led the design and implementation of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Encounter Data Processing System (EDPS NextGen), which generated 85% savings in operating costs and won the FedHealthIT Innovation Award in 2018. Niraj has worked with various organizations as Enterprise Architect and played a key role in CMS’ Risk Adjustment Data Validation (RADV) and Data Services Hub Program in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Niraj is a graduate from Birsa Institute of Technology and holds 15 architect level cloud certifications (11 AWS, 4 Azure), which only a handful of cloud experts globally hold.

Kuldeep leads innovation in data science, ensuring cutting-edge techniques are both developed and implemented throughout the product portfolio, driving better performance and higher value for all customers. Prior to joining HiLabs, Kuldeep was the global head of Applied Data Science research at Guavus, a Thales Group Big Data analytics company. Kuldeep has over 18 years of experience in a variety of industries in a wide range of areas and technologies. He has been an entrepreneur, technology enthusiast, performance architect, and a data science researcher. He took Auptyma, a startup, from concept to market through technological innovations, resulting in a successful exit when Oracle acquired the company. Kuldeep holds a B. Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT-Delhi. Kuldeep is very active on the industry conference circuit as an expert speaker. He has six conference publications, the best known is on Optimal Kernel Density Estimation in an international journal. Kuldeep also holds a US patent on an ‘Ensemble of Anomalies’ approach.

Anish is responsible for maintaining the MCheck platform and developing HiLabs' core products. He leads the research and implementation of AI-based machine learning algorithms using Big Data technologies. Previously, he was chief architect at Roposo, a video content platform startup acquired by Japan’s SoftBank-backed InMobi Group. He has also worked in Algorithmic Trading Strategies teams at Nomura and Lehman Brothers. Anish is passionate about using big data and AI/ML technologies that help uncover hidden patterns, find meaningful correlations, and provide actionable insights for organizations. Anish graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi with a Computer Science degree and has completed a Machine Learning course at Columbia University. He is a Math and Chemistry Olympiad merit holder.

He is working in areas of identifying healthcare providers involved in Fraud Waste and Abuse (FWA) by enhancing the platform's capabilities for volume analysis. He also is involved in creating automated pipeline for spawning/terminating AWS resources per workload, identifying missed opportunities in member clinical data, and applying HiLabs AI model for real time monitoring of claim overpayments.
